Pardoned man arrested in Syria

A PARDONED Bahraini terror suspect was last night still in Syrian police custody after being arrested as he tried to leave for home.

Shaikh Mohammed Habib Al Muqdad entered Syria four days ago, but was arrested at Damascus airport as he was about to fly out early yesterday.

His name apparently showed up on a list of people banned from travelling, on an immigration desk computer.

Court protest over murder trial

DOZENS of protesters gathered outside the Justice and Islamic Affairs Ministry yesterday to demonstrate against the continuing trial of 19 men accused of murdering a policeman.

The streets surrounding the complex echoed to the chants of relatives, who stood in the sun for two hours, holding placards demanding they be released, after being denied entry.

MADINAT HAMAD, Bahrain -- On a recent evening, Issa al Jibb climbed the roof of his home and started hurling Molotov cocktails into the adjoining property of the Rawi clan. By the time Bahraini police shot him down with a rubber bullet, Mr. Jibb had managed to burn three cars and part of the building, and inflicted serious burns on two Rawi teenagers.

Bahrain has decided not to revoke a system that has been criticized for violating the rights of foreign workers.

The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) said it would not be canceling the sponsorship system, which stipulates that foreign workers in the Gulf country must be sponsored by an employee in order to obtain a work visa and cannot switch jobs freely.
